Effortless Recycling

Facebook | Website

Lubbock has never been known as a great recycling city, but a new company is trying to change that. The bins at United are just not enough anymore. Lubbock is booming right now and will continue to do so for many years to come. More people equals more trash in the landfill and we cannot continue to throw away products that are reusable. Businesses have come and gone in Lubbock, but Effortless Recycling is here to stay.

Residents and businesses in Lubbock now have the opportunity to recycle paper, bottles, etc… instead of just sending it all to landfills.  I am not a tree hugger but if there are actions we can take that are easy then we should take them. Check out this interview with the folks at Effortless Recycling.

Lubbock is not known for its recycling, what made you decide to start Effortless Recycling?

We started Effortless Recycling to fill a need in our region.  Our goal is to provide convenient, cost effective recycling solutions to both residential and commercial clients.  Right now it is difficult for the average person in West Texas to recycle.  It is difficult because of the lack of recycling options and there is a lack of options because recycling is typically an expensive operation to manage.  Effortless Recycling was started with hopes of shaking up the recycling industry in West Texas.  We are providing fresh and innovative ways to recycle.  On the residential side, we are literally pioneering single-stream curbside pickup here in Lubbock.  Commercially, we are introducing a similar concept which will not only help businesses recycle more, but reduce their waste bills as well.  Think about that!  If you are a business owner here in Lubbock and you are not recycling, we can likely save you money on your trash bill each month.  In an industry that is known for costing more than it is worth we are doing everything we can to bring excitement to the idea of recycling on a commercial scale.
What do you offer businesses and residents? What are your costs?
Residential single-stream curbside pickup.  The term “single-stream” means that you, as a customer, do not have to sort any of your recyclable materials.  After signup, we provide the bags you need and place you on a pick up route.  Every other week you will place your bags outside (curbside) and one of our team members will pick them up, take them back to our facility and do all of the sorting for you.  This eliminates the biggest challenge for recyclers.  Most people just do not have the time or space to sort recyclable materials into so many different categories.  This is the best feature of the overall service that we offer.  All we need is for you to place all of your recyclables in one place; let us take it from there.  Hence the phrase:  “Let us take the effort out of recycling for you”.  The cost of this service is $30/month + tax. There is no contract required.
We also offer similar services for commercial clients, just on a larger scale.  The actual services provided vary by client because we usually customize our services depending on what the goals of the commercial client are.  Whether you are a small restaurant or a large distribution center we can meet your needs.  The size of the commercial facility is not an issue as we are equipped to handle large volumes of material. The important note here is that the single-stream theme still applies.  We have the abilities and resources to be sure that as a commercial client, you will be recycling as much material as possible and we will take care of all of it.  The days of having multiple vendors to recycle each type of material are fading away.  With this old model, most commercial clients end up paying large sums of money to recycle.  By allowing us to take care of everything, most of our commercial clients either save money on their trash bills or in many cases, actually MAKE money by recycling.  That’s right, some commercial clients actually get paid to recycle.  Pricing varies by client so please call to schedule a waste audit and quote.  We will also manage recycling at special events.  As with commercial these prices vary by event so please call for a quote.
Recycling can be a pain. How do you make it easier?
This is the best part!  Recyclers do not have to do anything more than what they are already doing.  We have made it as easy as throwing away your regular garbage.  All you have to do is place your recyclable material (a detailed list is provided on our website) in bags that we provide and then place those bags out every other week. We will take care of the rest.
For those who are hesitant to recycle, what is your advice?
Just give it a chance and try it out!  We do not require a contract for our residential services, which means you can cancel at any time (we do ask for 30 days notice) if you feel we are not providing you with a valuable service.  Most people do not recycle because of the time and effort required.  Our goal is to take both the time and effort out of recycling for our clients.  By making it as easy as possible to recycle we hope to really get the community involved in recycling.  We are not a special interest group here to save a specific species (although that is a nice benefit of what we do!); rather we are just a group of people who see the need to be smart with our resources.  We are here to help people with common sense recycling.  If we can reuse materials in a safe manner, why not?
What really stood out to me in this interview is “we are not a special interest group here to save specific species”. This is not a green movement. A lot of people are turned off by the “green movement”, but this businesses core values revolve around sustainability. It is a good thing not a bad thing. And if you want more TRUE cliches: We have to plan for the future for our kids and grand kids. Keep the Earth Beautiful.

So how are they actually managing the items for recycling? Where are they taking it, and how do we know that it is actually being recycled???

  2. SHARON September 24, 2013 at 3:01 pm

they can pay commercial companies back for recycling, then why not make it free for residential customers. If they charge 30 dollars to pick up recycling in Lubbock then they have already lost. LPL already charges to pick up trash. why don’t they pay LPL for their garbage if it is such a great money maker and everyone in Lubbock might save money because then they are paying the LPL ‘wankers’ for something Lubbock already pays them to take care of. LPL is always looking for a way to overcharge its customers, this could make them look for a way to save their customers money.

Melissa – Great question! We have a 27,000 sqft facility here in Lubbock just off I-27 and Erskine. Our team sorts, bales and stores all material there until we have enough to send it to a facility that can process that type of material. We are part of the CTRA coop and they find the places to send all of our material. Once those larger facilities have the material, they will process and reuse the material. BTW – you are welcome to come see the facility, just shoot us an email!

Sharon – The article stats that “some” commercial clients make money. That is because they deal with massive volumes of a particular product. That is not the case with residential.

If it were as easy as going through the city trash we would do it, but it isn’t. There are many costs associated with what we do and that is why the need for the service fee. If we grow big enough I promise we will be knocking on the city’s door as we would love to work in conjunction with them. In fact, we are already trying something similar in one of the smaller cities around us (can’t say where yet 🙂 ).

I know the service we offer is not for everyone, but I hope you will consider giving it a try.

  7. Cassie September 24, 2013 at 11:10 pm

I live in apartment (that has a trash problem), how can I utilize this service?

  8. Jason C September 25, 2013 at 9:14 pm

Cassie – In most cases we can service an apartment the same as we do a house. Call the office and we can discuss options for your apartment complex. 806.686.2161

    dear sirs,
I was wondering…I already drop off my recycling material at City of LUBBOCK sites. So can I drop it off at your facility at no cost, or is pick up service the only option I have?
    Thank you!
