Harrigan’s, There Again

Photo Dec 16, 10 39 50 AM

Particulars: Harrigan’s; 3827 50th St. in Memphis Place Mall; 806-771-8880; Mon-Thu 11am to 10pm, Fri-Sat 11am-11pm, Sun 10:30am-10pm
In the Loop: A Lubbock staple that offers up a variety of quality, yummy food in a dim, pleasant atmosphere.
Target Lubbockite: Perfect for date night, girls’ night out, family dinner, business events, etc…

Harrigan’s, opening originally in 1977, has been a standout restaurant to have a delicious meal in Lubbock. After a change of ownership in 2004 and a fire in early 2012, Harrigan’s has overcome challenges and improved their franchise (even opening a Harrigan’s in Odessa).

In February 2012, there was a small fire that produced extensive smoke damage to the restaurant, forcing the restaurant to close for several months. The wind pushed the smoke all over, meaning the ceilings, carpets, and upholstery had to all be replaced. After three and a half months, they reopened better and tastier than ever.

In addition to the main restaurant, Harrigan’s offers a couple of other neat features. There is the Memphis Room, which is a private banquet room. It seats up to 50 people and has modern technology features to accommodate business lunches/dinners, receptions, holiday parties, and any other event imaginable. Also, there is the Legends Lounge, which is a non-smoking bar. You can catch live music in this bar on Friday and Saturday nights. Happy hour inside the bar (4-8pm and 9pm-close) features great drink specials! The bar is open whenever the restaurant is, along with extended hours – til midnight on weekdays and til 2am on the weekends. Enjoy a few rounds of drinks with friends late into the night!

So, what’s Harrigan’s famous for? For starters, they have amazing mesquite-smoked prime rib. In the mood for a filet, ribeye, or NY strip? Harrigan’s flash-sears their steaks in a 1500 degree broiler for premium deliciousness. My personal recommendations/favorites… fried zucchini chips (can’t beat ‘em!), chicken provolone, and a Pometini to wash it all down. Seriously, their martinis are out of this world. Also, come by on a Sunday morning for brunch!

I really enjoy going to Harrigan’s. You will be very well taken care of and served excellent food. It’s a different eating experience than other chain restaurants in the area.

Check them out (and the menu!) on their website and follow them on Facebook for daily updates.

Special thanks to Meredith and the kind folks at Harrigan’s for being informative and offering a giveaway to YOU, our LITLites….

My all-time favorite Christmas gift is the gift of family now that I am in college! Coming home and spending time with loved ones means more than any gift under the tree.

My oldest daughter had a very rare liver disease, and on Christmas of 2005. We got the call from Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston that there was a liver available. The surgery was a success and it saved her life. That is my favorite Christmas gift that was given to us by someone that didn’t know us and obviously went through something awful on Christmas.

My mom made me a black board that was mounted on a very large turtle-shaped board when I was a little girl. I loved it!

I received Christmas presents every year, but for some reason, the only one I remember is a Teddy Bear I got when I was 5. I carried that thing around everywhere.

My all-time favorite Christmas gift is a tree ornament that says “26.2″ on it, symbolizing the distance of the marathon. Very simple, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

My all-time favorite Christmas gift was a sterling silver cross necklace that my husband gave to me in our early years of marriage, shortly after I was saved. It’s the only gift that ever brought tears to my eyes!

We used to love Harrigans and we would dine there every time we were in town. We recently moved to Lubbock and were excited to eat there again, but this time the experience was awful. We waited over 45 minutes for our food. The waiter apologized and said there was a large table in their Memphis room and they got their order in before ours, so our food was late. The manager came over and explained the same thing and then when he walked away he said “you’re welcome” sarcastically as if we should be thankful he came to explain. It was my husband and I and our three children eating. We ordered the fried zucchini as the appetizer, Prime rib, chicken fried steak, and the children ordered the grilled cheese, hamburger, and my 11 year old ordered the adult size of chicken bits. The fried zucchini was great, but when the food came out it was cold. My daughters grilled cheese was hard and the cheese was not melted, but sandwiched between two pieces of bread. My son who is six and was really hungry wouldn’t eat his burger because he said it tasted bad and it was also cold. My husbands chicken fried steak had been sitting under the light so long the gravy had started to crack. My prime rib had the smokey flavor, but it was bland and cold. My 11 year old said his chicken was hard and didn’t taste good. Our bill was $70 and some change, with the tip it was $84. My husband wanted to tip 10%, but I felt sorry for the waiter who still makes $2.15 an hour. We could have spent the same amount and eaten better, with entertainment if we had gone to a Japanese food grill.
